Sometimes inspiration takes you to places you never expected.
Recently, I visited a small village (Raghurajpur, Odisha) where the beautiful art of Patachitra has been practiced for generations. What I experienced there was truly inspiring. It shifted something in how I think about Mitti, and why this brand exists beyond just clothes.
Patachitra artwork from Odisha, carried forward through generations.
"A trip that reminded us where real Indian art comes from."
6 generations of artistry.
Sitting with Sonu as he walked us through his family's work.
I had the chance to meet Sonu, a 6th generation Patachitra artist. Think about that for a second. Six generations! That is not just skill passed down through practice. That is identity, responsibility, and love for something far bigger than yourself.
Listening to him speak about the art, the discipline, and the weight of carrying forward his family's legacy was genuinely moving. He spoke with quiet pride, not the kind you perform for visitors. The kind you carry every single day.
Why this trip mattered.
Painting outside every house in the village.
Seeing the dedication behind traditional art forms gave me new ideas and new perspectives. We know so little about the depth of craft that exists right in our own culture. Entire worlds of knowledge, technique, and meaning sit quietly in villages most of us will never visit.
That is part of what Mitti is trying to do. Not just sell clothing, but reconnect with the richness of what Indian art and culture actually holds. Trips like this make that mission feel real and grounded.
Artworks worth sharing.
A few of the artworks from Sonu's studio. Each one hand-painted with natural pigments.
Before leaving, I bought a few of Sonu's artworks. Not to resell them. Simply to support the incredible work he is doing, and to bring a piece of this tradition home.
I would love to give these artworks to a few of you in the Mitti community. Just as our small contribution in spreading the beauty of Patachitra a little further into the world.
A century old wall part with every detail is painted freehand using natural colours.
Visit like this remind us that behind every traditional art form are generations of passion, patience, and dedication. Grateful to have experienced it firsthand.
"Art like this deserves to be seen."
